Quick Checks Before You Convert

GLB → OBJ splits one binary file into multiple files (.obj + .mtl + textures). A 30-second review prevents data loss.

Textures will be extracted as separate files

GLB stores everything in one binary file. When converting to OBJ, the geometry goes into a .obj file, materials into a .mtl file, and textures become separate image files (PNG, JPG). Download and keep all of them together.

Animations do not convert to OBJ

GLB can store skeletal and morph-target animations. OBJ has no animation support - only the rest pose of the mesh is exported. If you need animation data, keep the original GLB.

Check for Draco compression

Some GLB files use KHR_draco_mesh_compression for smaller file sizes. Our converter handles Draco decoding automatically, but if you use other tools, ensure they support Draco.

Verify scene hierarchy

GLB can contain multiple objects in a scene graph with transforms. OBJ flattens this into a single mesh list with named groups. Verify that object names and transforms are preserved correctly after conversion.

Fixing Common Issues After Conversion

Typical errors after GLB → OBJ and how to resolve them.

OBJ file is larger than the GLB

Expected. GLB is a compressed binary format; OBJ is text-based. A GLB that is 5MB may produce a 15-25MB OBJ plus separate texture files. The geometry is identical, only the encoding differs.

Textures appear missing when opening the OBJ

OBJ references textures via the MTL file. Make sure the .obj, .mtl, and all texture image files are in the same directory. If textures still don't load, check that the MTL file paths point to the correct image filenames.

Model appears at wrong scale

GLB uses meters by convention; OBJ has no unit metadata. Open the OBJ in your 3D software and verify the dimensions match expectations. Scale accordingly (e.g., ×1000 if the GLB was in meters and you need millimeters).

Multiple objects merged into one

GLB scene hierarchy with nested transforms may be flattened. Named groups in the OBJ preserve object names as 'g' directives. Use your 3D software's object browser to separate them by group.

What Is a GLB File?

GLB is a binary 3D file format that packages an entire 3D scene - mesh geometry, PBR materials, textures, animations, cameras, and scene hierarchy - into a single compact file. It is the binary version of glTF, the open standard maintained by the Khronos Group and known as the "JPEG of 3D".

Because it is efficient, self-contained, and web-friendly, GLB is the dominant format for delivering 3D content to browsers (via Three.js, Babylon.js) and game engines (Unity, Unreal, Godot). It supports modern extensions like Draco compression and mesh quantization for even smaller files.

GLB vs OBJ: why convert?

GLB is richer and more compact than OBJ, but some 3D editing workflows prefer OBJ because it is text-based, universally supported by every 3D application, and separates geometry from materials into editable files. Converting GLB to OBJ makes your model editable in any 3D software while preserving materials and textures via the companion MTL file. This is the standard path from a web/game asset to an editable 3D model.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert a GLB file to OBJ?

Upload your .glb file using the tool above, preview it in the 3D viewport, then click Convert to OBJ. The file is processed on our secure servers and the OBJ (with MTL materials) is ready for download instantly.

What is the difference between GLB and OBJ?

GLB (GL Transmission Format Binary), introduced in 2017 by the Khronos Group, is a compact binary container storing mesh geometry, PBR materials, textures, animations, and scene hierarchy in a single file. OBJ (Wavefront Object), created in the 1990s, is a text-based format storing mesh geometry with optional MTL material files. GLB is best for web and game engines; OBJ is best for 3D editing software and CAD workflows.

Will textures and materials be preserved?

Yes. Unlike STL, OBJ supports materials. The converter extracts GLB materials and textures, producing a .obj file, a companion .mtl material file, and texture image files. UV coordinates are preserved so textures map correctly.

How do I convert GLB to OBJ in Blender?

Open Blender → File → Import → glTF 2.0 (.glb) to load your file. Select the object, then File → Export → Wavefront (.obj). Blender reads GLB natively and exports OBJ with MTL materials. Check 'Apply Modifiers' in export settings if needed.

Does the tool preserve animations?

No. OBJ has no concept of animation, skeletal bones, or morph targets. Only the static mesh in its rest pose is exported. If you need animation data, keep the original GLB file.

What is a GLB file?

GLB is the binary container of glTF (GL Transmission Format) - a royalty-free, open standard maintained by the Khronos Group, recognized as the 'JPEG of 3D'. It packages an entire 3D scene - mesh geometry, PBR materials, textures, animations, cameras - into a single compact binary file. It is widely supported by Blender, Three.js, Babylon.js, Unity, and Unreal.

Is the GLB to OBJ converter free?

Yes. The tool is free to use with an instant 3D preview and no watermarks. Upload your GLB file, preview it, and convert to OBJ in seconds.

Are my files safe when uploading?

Yes. Your file is transmitted over SSL and processed on our secure servers. After conversion, the uploaded file is automatically deleted - we do not store your 3D models permanently.

How long does it take to convert GLB to OBJ?

Conversion typically completes in a few seconds after uploading. The preview renders instantly in your browser, and server-side processing handles the conversion quickly. Larger models with complex materials or high-poly meshes may take slightly longer.

Does it support Draco-compressed GLB files?

Yes. The converter uses three.js GLTFLoader with Draco decoding, so GLB files compressed with KHR_draco_mesh_compression are decoded and converted correctly. Mesh quantization (KHR_mesh_quantization) is also supported.

What is the maximum file size?

Up to 50MB per file. Conversion runs on our servers, so processing speed does not depend on your device's capabilities.

Why convert GLB to OBJ?

GLB is optimized for web delivery (single binary file, Draco compression, PBR materials). OBJ is the lingua franca of 3D editing - virtually every 3D application (Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, ZBrush, Cinema 4D, MeshLab) reads and writes OBJ. Converting GLB to OBJ makes your model editable in any 3D software, with materials and textures preserved.

Can I open OBJ files in Unity or Unreal?

Yes. Both Unity and Unreal Engine support importing OBJ files. However, for game engines, GLB or FBX may be more efficient as they preserve animations and scene hierarchy. Use OBJ when you need maximum compatibility with 3D editing tools.

What devices and browsers are supported?

Any modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge) with WebGL support, on any operating system - Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, or Android. No software installation or plugins required.
