How to Convert STL to glTF

1

Upload Your STL File

Drag and drop your .stl file onto the converter above, or click to browse. Your file is processed securely.

2

Automatic Conversion

The converter transforms your STL triangle mesh into glTF format with JSON structure and binary geometry data for web 3D applications.

3

Download Your glTF

Once conversion is complete, download your glTF file and use it in Three.js, Babylon.js, or any web 3D viewer.

Why Choose Our Converter

Free & No Sign-Up

Convert STL to glTF for free with no registration, no watermarks, and no hidden costs.

Web-Ready Output

glTF is the standard format for web-based 3D. The output file works in Three.js, Babylon.js, Google Model Viewer, and WebXR.

Accurate Geometry

Triangle mesh geometry from the STL file is accurately transferred to glTF format with proper vertex normals.

Compact Binary

glTF uses efficient binary encoding for geometry data, producing files suitable for fast web loading.

2 Ways to Convert STL to glTF

1

Online STL to glTF Converter (This Tool)

Best for: quick, no-install conversion

  1. Drag and drop your .stl file onto the converter.
  2. Wait for the automatic conversion.
  3. Download the glTF file for web use.

Pros: Free, no software install, works on any device.

Cons: Requires internet. STL has no material data, so the glTF will have default materials.

2

Blender (Free Desktop Software)

Best for: adding materials before export

  1. Open Blender and import your STL (File > Import > STL).
  2. Add materials and textures as desired.
  3. Go to File > Export > glTF 2.0 (.glb/.gltf).
  4. Select .gltf format and click Export.

Pros: Free. Can add PBR materials before exporting. Full control over output.

Cons: Requires installing Blender.

Quick Checks Before You Convert

STL Has No Materials

STL format only stores geometry. The converted glTF will have a default grey material. To add colors, use Blender to assign materials before exporting to glTF.

Binary vs ASCII STL

Both binary and ASCII STL files are supported. Binary STL is preferred for faster processing and smaller file size.

Mesh Quality

Check for non-manifold edges and holes in the STL before conversion. Clean meshes produce better glTF output for web rendering.

File Size

Large STL files (>100MB) may take longer to convert. Consider simplifying the mesh in MeshLab or Blender before conversion.

Fixing Common Issues After Conversion

glTF model appears grey with no materials

STL format does not store material data. To add materials, import the STL into Blender, assign Principled BSDF materials, then export as glTF.

Model orientation is wrong

STL files may have different coordinate systems than glTF. The Z-axis (up) should be correct, but check rotation in your viewer. Rotate in Blender if needed.

glTF file is too large for web

Use Blender's glTF export with Draco compression enabled to reduce file size by 50-90%. Alternatively, simplify the mesh in MeshLab first.

Normals are inverted

Some STL files have flipped normals causing inside-out rendering. Use Blender's Mesh > Normals > Recalculate Outside (Ctrl+N) before exporting.

What Is an STL File?

STL (Standard Triangle Language, or Stereolithography) is a 3D file format created in 1987 for stereolithography apparatus (SLA) 3D printing. It stores only surface geometry as a list of triangles — no color, material, texture, or units.

Despite its age and simplicity, STL remains the universal format for 3D printing. Every slicer — Cura, PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio, Lychee Slicer — reads STL natively. STL files come in two flavors: ASCII (human-readable, large) and binary (compact, preferred).

STL vs glTF: why convert?

STL stores only geometry. glTF stores geometry, PBR materials, animations, and scene data. Converting STL to glTF brings your print-only model into the modern 3D pipeline — enabling web display via Three.js, game engine import, and AR/VR applications. The geometry transfers exactly; glTF simply wraps it in a richer container.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert STL to glTF?

Upload your .stl file using the converter above. The tool converts the triangle mesh to glTF format. Once complete, download the glTF file.

Is this STL to glTF converter free?

Yes, completely free. No registration, no watermarks, no hidden costs.

Does converting STL to glTF preserve materials?

No. STL format only stores geometry, not materials. The converted glTF will have a default grey material. To add colors and textures, import the STL into Blender, apply materials, then export as glTF.

What is the difference between STL and glTF?

STL stores only triangle mesh geometry for 3D printing. glTF stores geometry plus materials, textures, animations, and scene hierarchy for web 3D rendering. glTF is the web 3D standard; STL is the 3D printing standard.

How do I convert STL to glTF in Blender?

In Blender, go to File > Import > STL. Then go to File > Export > glTF 2.0 (.glb/.gltf). Select .gltf format and click Export. You can add materials between import and export.

STL vs glTF: which is better for web?

glTF is far better for web. It supports PBR materials, is optimized for real-time rendering, and loads efficiently in browsers. STL is for 3D printing only and cannot be used directly in web 3D applications.

Can I convert STL to glTF on Mac?

Yes. Our online converter works in any browser on macOS. Alternatively, download Blender for Mac.

What is glTF format?

glTF (GL Transmission Format) is a royalty-free 3D file format maintained by the Khronos Group. Often called the "JPEG of 3D," it is the standard format for delivering 3D content to web browsers and AR/VR applications.

Can I convert multiple STL files to glTF?

Yes. You can convert as many STL files as needed. Each file is processed independently.

Why use glTF instead of STL for web?

glTF supports PBR materials, textures, and animations that STL cannot store. glTF is also more compact and optimized for real-time rendering in WebGL applications. STL is a 3D printing format, not a web format.
